Crop 2010 Update – Extremadura - Spain

Wednesday, 24th March 2010

The weather situation in the major growing area of tomatoes in Badajoz/Extremadura (Spain) is still preventing farmers from planting seedlings. For the past 4 weeks it has rained for most of the time and more rain is expected this weekend.

Planting of seedlings should have taken place by now, but at the moment farmers have been unable to allow tractors to prepare the land. With luck if the rain moves away over the next week or so, and the land starts to dry sufficiently, planting may take place next week or the week after.

At the moment, the situation is unlikely to affect the total amount of tomatoes planned for processing, but it does look as though harvesting will be late by about 2-3 weeks.

Once more information is available we will update you.
